2012 NEWS - SUMMER

CHARLESTON - June 7 - The Charleston YMCA will host lacrosse every Saturday during the month of July (all five of them). 15 minutes of warm-up & drills, followed by scrimmage. Full equipment will be required to scrimmage.

     Boys in grades 3-5 for the upcoming school year will meet on Sundays 4:00 to 5:00 PM
     Boys in grades 6-8 for the upcoming school year will meet on Sundays 5:00 to 6:00 PM

       The Y has a limited amount of equipment set aside for players who cannot afford gear or for players who want to try the sport before buying. Those who wish to borrow equipment, please see William Seeden at the Y prior to the first day of the program. Registration is open now through July 1st. Register at the Y.
       New players are welcome. This is a great opportunity to learn the sport of lacrosse. Attendance at every session is not required.


MARTINSBURG - June 18 - Panhandle Lacrosse is hosting a lacrosse camp July 9-13 at the Poor House Farm Park 5:30 to 8:00 PM. Registration is available through the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Rec. Cost is $60 and is open to boys and girls ages 5-17.  Contact is Rodney Watcher at panhandlelax@yahoo.com

FORT GAY - June 27 - The WV lacrosse community lost an old friend last week. Charles "Sid" Davis, 39, was taken off life support at the Flagstaff Medical Center in Flagstaff, Arizona, after injuries sustained from hitting a deer while riding his motorcycle. Sid played defense for WVU while attending dental school in the late 90's.
       Visitation for friends will be 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa, Kentucky. The funeral will be Friday at 11 AM, with the burial to follow.
       Anyone wishing to contribute to a Sid Davis Scholarship Fund at the WVU School of Dentistry can send a check to the WVU Foundation at P.O. Box 9008, Morgantown, WV 26506. Checks should be made out to the "WVU Foundation" with "In Memory of Sid Davis" in the lower left corner. If you need further information, call Robert Wanker at the WVU Foundation at 304-293-4301.

KINGWOOD - July 12 - Members of the Preston High lacrosse team volunteered to introduce lacrosse to the kids at Preston County's Sports Camp held at the Kingwood Civic Center yesterday. At least twenty new boys and girls now know that this great sport exists.

- Games are starting to be entered in the 2013 calendar. SAT and ACT dates, holidays, and some spring breaks are listed. University boys & girls are the first teams to post games. They will open up Mar. 16 with home games vs. Mercersburg Academy.

FAIRMONT - July 18 - Fairmont Senior Lacrosse suffered big a loss this week when the program's treasurer, Becky Heck, passed away suddenly. Her son, Daniel, a senior, played attack for the Polar Bears. The only service is this evening at the Domico Funeral Home in Fairmont.

Former FSHS middie, Jarrett Hoffman, was involved in an automobile accident on July 9th. His obituary is also in The Times West Virginian. Melissa Nagowski, former head parent of the Fairmont program, reported that Jarrett's coffin was filled with his lax stuff.

Winner's Edge comes to Morgantown Thursday
MORGANTOWN - July 21 - Becky Luzier, former University High player & assistant coach, is now the director and head coach of Pittsburgh based Intrepid Girls Lacrosse Club and owner of Winner's Edge Lacrosse. She is bringing a staff of college coaches to Morgantown High on Thursday, July 26 for a one day clinic for girls entering 9th grade through 12th grade. The clinic will be 10 AM to 4 PM on Morgantown High's field

BUCKHANNON - July 27 - West Virginia Wesleyan Athletic Director Randy Tenney has announced the hiring of Karli Brentlinger to be the new coach for the Bobcat's women's lacrosse program. Brentlinger was a standout player at Longwood University in Virginia.

SHEPHERD - July 28 - The Shepherd University women's program has announced the signing
of six new recruits, all from Maryland. The Lady Rams finished 11-4 last season with no seniors on the roster. Things are looking good for the eastern panhandle team.  Read more at SU site


VIENNA - Aug. 2 - Ohio Valley University now has a new head coach. Corey Struss has been named to lead the Fighting Scots for the 2012-13 season. Struss was a grad assistant last season directing the defense and recruiting. He played college ball at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa.
       Older Morgantown and University players may remember him as the goalie for North Hills in the old WPSLA. Struss was named to the WPSLA D2 All Division North Team in 2006, the same year Morgantown's Lee Wiley was selected D2 All Division goalie for the South Team.

WASHINGTON, PA. - Aug. 10 - Four Wheeling area players contributed to their teams in the Silverheels 14 & under summer league championship game last night at the Brownson House in Washington, Pa. Danny Schultz scored a goal for the championship Statesmen squad in their 5-3 win over Big Red. Zachary Castilow was in the cage for the Statesmen and made 6 saves, including 2 in the latter part of the game to preserve the victory.
       Kaleb Karnell scored one goal and Zach Beaver added 2 assists for the Big Red squad.

WHEELING - Aug. 14 - Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse announced the addition of 16 new players to their program. University High's Andy Lyon, a middie, is the only West Virginian added this year. Read more at WJU site

Wesleyan looking for an assistant coach
BUCKHANNON - August 7
- West Virginia Wesleyan invites qualified applicants to apply for the part-time assistant lacrosse coaching position. WVWC is a Division II program, entering into its third season. Duties will include but are not limited to organizing practice plans, strength and conditioning, mentoring of student-athletes, recruiting, assistance with camps and clinics, game preparation and assistance with team fund raising. Applicant must adhere to all NCAA and WVWC policies and procedures.
 
Requirements: Bachelor's degree. Applicants must have lacrosse playing and/or coaching experience.
 
The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit a letter of application, a resume, and three professional references.  Salary: Competitive stipend, housing/room and board and meal plan included.  Appointment: Part-Time

Phantoms Celebrate 2012 Season
WHEELING - Aug. 19 - The Ohio County Phantoms youth lacrosse team recently celebrated the conclusion if its 2012 season at a picnic held for the players at Oglebay Park. In just its second year of existence, the Phantoms fielded two competitive squads of middle school aged players this year, both under the direction of Head Coach Chuck Scatterday. Read more

Winner's Edge comes back to Morgantown October 6th - Canceled Oct. 4
MORGANTOWN - Aug. 20 - Winner's Edge will return to Morgantown High's field on Saturday October 6 to host a one day girls' clinic. They will be expanding to include 7th & 8th graders as well as high school age girls. The clinic will include at least five college coaches.
